Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting online income tax returns by a further month, offering additional time for taxpayers to comply.

Under the revised schedule, the final date for filing returns for the 2025–26 tax year has been set at 31 January 2026, according to an official notification issued on Sunday.

The notice was signed by Md Ekramul Haque, Second Secretary (Tax Law-1) of the NBR.

The original deadline for submitting returns was 30 November, which had earlier been extended to 31 December following requests from business groups and individual taxpayers. The latest extension grants an additional month for filing.

In the notification, the NBR said the decision was taken in the public interest, exercising powers granted under Section 334 of the Income Tax Act 2023, with prior approval from the government. The extension applies to individual taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs).

NBR officials said more than one million taxpayers have already submitted their returns online during the current tax year.

The online tax return system was formally launched on 4 August 2025 by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed as part of efforts to modernise tax administration and increase compliance through digital services.

Under a special order issued this year, online filing has been made mandatory for most individual taxpayers. Exemptions apply to senior citizens aged over 65, persons with disabilities or special needs, taxpayers living abroad, legal heirs of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. However, taxpayers outside the mandatory category may also choose to file online voluntarily.

The NBR said taxpayers living abroad can register for the e-return system by submitting their passport number, national identity number and email address to [email protected] , after which they receive a registration link and one-time password by email.

Once registered, taxpayers can submit income, expenditure, asset and liability information online and receive an instant acknowledgement slip and income tax certificate without submitting physical documents.

To support taxpayers, the NBR has set up a call centre, online support services and e-return help desks in all tax zones across the country. Officials said the system has been gaining popularity both domestically and among non-resident Bangladeshis.

The extension comes as part of broader efforts to encourage voluntary compliance and ease the transition to a fully digital tax filing system.
