Traders at the capital’s Karwan Bazar have announced reductions in the prices of several essential commodities, including lemon, edible oil, sugar and beef, in an effort to provide relief to consumers during the ongoing holy month of Ramadan.
The price cuts were declared at a press conference organised by Islamia Shanti Samiti at the kitchen market of Karwan Bazar on Monday.
Business leaders said the decision was taken voluntarily by trimming their profit margins to help customers cope with rising expenses during Ramadan.
Under the new price structure, lemon prices will drop by Tk2 per piece across all categories. Premium lemons, currently selling for up to Tk17 each, and lower-grade varieties priced as low as Tk3, will both see the same reduction.
Edible oil prices will be reduced by Tk1 per litre. As a result, a five-litre bottle previously sold for Tk920 will now cost Tk915.
Packaged sugar, which carries a printed price of Tk105 per kg and was being sold at Tk102, will now be available at Tk101 per kg. Gram (chhola) prices will fall from Tk85 to Tk83 per kg.
Beef prices have been reduced by Tk30 per kg, bringing the rate down to Tk750. Miniket rice will also see a reduction of Tk1 per kg.
Other reductions include a Tk5 cut on 200-gram packets of Tang beverage.
The announcement was made in the presence of Saiful Islam Milon, MP from the Dhaka-12 constituency, along with local business leaders.
Traders said the move reflects their commitment to supporting consumers during a time of increased household spending.
