A vessel carrying 61,000 metric tonnes of wheat from the United States has reached the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port, marking the third shipment under a government-to-government (G2G) cash purchase agreement between the two countries.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Food on Wednesday, the ship MV MP Ultra Max 2 is currently undergoing sample testing procedures before the unloading process begins.

Earlier, Bangladesh received 58,457 metric tonnes of wheat in the first shipment and 62,150 metric tonnes in the second shipment under the same agreement.

Authorities have already completed arrangements to ensure the swift discharge of the latest consignment.

Of the total wheat carried by the vessel, 29,450 metric tons will be unloaded at Chattogram Port, while the remaining 31,550 metric tonnes will be transported to Mongla Port for unloading.

Bangladesh has been importing wheat from the United States through G2G agreements to meet its growing demand. So far, the country has successfully received all 4,67,884 metric tonnes of wheat under the G2G-01 and G2G-02 agreements, with 2,37,845 metric tonnes under G2G-01 and 2,30,039 metric tonnes under G2G-02.

With an annual demand of approximately 7 million metric tonnes of wheat and domestic production limited to around 1 million metric tonnes, Bangladesh continues to rely heavily on imports - both public and private - to bridge the significant supply gap.
