Bangladesh is aiming to transform into a trillion-dollar economy by 2034, with the government taking a comprehensive approach to boost income levels and strengthen economic growth, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Monday.

Responding to a question from lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain in the Jatiya Sangsad, the minister highlighted that the country’s per capita income reached US$2,769 in the 2024–25 fiscal year, according to data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

He explained that the government is preparing a broad strategy to achieve the ambitious target, focusing on areas such as investment, job creation, economic inclusion, and emerging sectors like the creative and sports economy. Rather than relying on a single driver, the plan emphasises balanced growth across multiple sectors.

The minister said priority is being given to generating employment in industries such as manufacturing, construction, services, ICT, agro-processing and small enterprises. At the same time, steps are being taken to attract private investment by simplifying business processes and ensuring a more supportive investment climate.

Efforts are also underway to strengthen small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by improving access to finance and encouraging entrepreneurship, particularly among women and young people. Export diversification and expansion into new markets are being pursued to increase foreign earnings, while initiatives to boost remittance inflows include enhancing overseas employment opportunities and promoting legal channels.

He further noted that skill development programmes are being expanded to meet both domestic and global labour market demands. Alongside this, the government is investing in agriculture and rural infrastructure to raise productivity and income at the grassroots level.

Some of these initiatives have already begun in the current fiscal year, while others will be implemented gradually over the short, medium and long term.

The finance minister expressed optimism that sustained progress in these areas will help raise living standards and guide Bangladesh steadily towards achieving its trillion-dollar economic goal.
