The Ministry of Commerce has officially approved the import of sulfuric acid to address domestic shortages and ensure a steady supply for key industrial sectors across Bangladesh.
The decision aims to prevent disruption in production and stabilise the domestic market amid rising demand and global supply fluctuations.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday by the ministry, the permission for imports was granted following urgent appeals from private sector stakeholders, who had expressed concern over potential shortages that could impact manufacturing operations. Industrial entrepreneurs had submitted formal petitions highlighting the risk of supply deficits, which prompted the ministry to take proactive measures to safeguard the sector.
Commerce Ministry officials stated that the move is intended to provide industrial manufacturers with a predictable supply of sulfuric acid, an essential raw material for a wide range of industries including fertilisers, chemicals, textiles and battery production. By enabling imports, the government seeks to reduce price volatility and mitigate inflationary pressures that could arise from domestic scarcity.
The ministry emphasised that this regulatory adjustment reflects a forward-looking strategy to maintain balance in the industrial chemicals market. It is expected to ensure uninterrupted operations for businesses while fostering investor confidence in the sector.
The decision also underscores the government’s commitment to supporting industrial growth and protecting the interests of manufacturers and consumers alike.
