Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has said that safeguarding national interest will remain the top priority while engaging any foreign operator for cargo handling at Chattogram Port’s New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT).

He made the remarks while briefing journalists after visiting the NCT-5 jetty at Chattogram Port on Sunday.

Addressing ongoing protests by port workers over the possible appointment of foreign operators, the minister said the concerns of workers are being taken into account. He, however, expressed hope that the agitation could be reconsidered if foreign involvement contributes positively to the port’s efficiency and overall economic growth, adding that local workers’ roles will remain protected in line with national priorities.

He further said that investment decisions in the port sector must be viewed in the context of global competitiveness, noting that countries such as Sri Lanka and Vietnam have already developed more advanced port facilities through foreign participation and improved operational models.

The minister also said the government is planning new projects under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, while several international organisations have shown interest in supporting Bangladesh’s port development through the landlord model, offering both investment and technical expertise.

During his visit, Sheikh Rabiul Alam identified several operational challenges at the port, although he acknowledged that overall progress has been positive.

He said improvement opportunities still exist and steps have already been initiated to address key issues.

According to him, further decisions will be taken after inter-ministerial discussions to ensure coordinated reforms in the port sector.

He reiterated that sectors with high economic potential, including Chattogram Port, are being given special importance in the government’s development agenda aimed at strengthening trade and economic growth.

State Minister for Shipping Md Rajib Ahsan, Member of Parliament Shahadat Hossain Selim, Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Zakaria, Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority Rear Admiral Md. Moniruzzaman, and senior officials from relevant sectors were also present at that time.
