The government of Bangladesh has decided to procure 14 aircraft from US-based Boeing as part of a broader plan to modernise and expand the national aviation fleet, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat said on Wednesday.

He also said that discussions are also underway to lease additional aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus to further strengthen fleet capacity and improve international connectivity.

According to the state minister, the interim government had already signed an agreement with the US government regarding the Boeing aircraft purchase. The final number of aircraft to be acquired will be confirmed by 30 April, he said.

Officials said the move is aimed at addressing growing passenger demand, improving flight frequency on high-demand routes, and reducing pressure on the existing fleet of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

Alongside fleet expansion, the government has also directed Biman Bangladesh Airlines to resume direct flights between Dhaka and Tokyo in June. The route is expected to enhance connectivity with Japan, support labour migration, and facilitate business and tourism exchanges between the two countries.

The state minister said restoring the Tokyo route is part of a broader strategy to expand Bangladesh’s aviation network in key international markets, particularly in East Asia and Europe, where demand for direct connectivity has been increasing.

Aviation officials noted that fleet constraints have long affected Biman’s ability to maintain regular international routes and expand operations. The addition of new aircraft is expected to improve operational efficiency and allow the airline to gradually expand its global presence.

The government believes that strengthening the national carrier through fleet expansion and new route restoration will play an important role in boosting trade, tourism, and manpower export opportunities.

Further details regarding delivery timelines, aircraft types, and financing arrangements are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks following ongoing negotiations with Boeing and Airbus.
