Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir on Wednesday highlighted the growing importance of adopting a circular economy, saying it is crucial for strengthening Bangladesh’s industrial competitiveness and ensuring sustainable economic growth.
Speaking at a seminar in Dhaka, the minister noted that global trade dynamics are rapidly evolving, with sustainability emerging as a central factor in determining market competitiveness.
He said buyers, investors, and consumers are increasingly prioritising production systems that emphasise efficiency, environmental responsibility, and long-term stability.
The seminar, titled “Accelerating circular economy transformation in Bangladesh through SWITCH2CE pilot initiative,” was jointly organised by the Ministry of Commerce and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association at a hotel in the capital.
Chaired by Commerce Ministry Secretary (routine charge) Md Abdur Rahim Khan, the event was attended by key stakeholders, including Michael Miller and BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan, who joined as special guests.
Muktadir pointed out that initiatives under the “SWITCH to Circular Economy” programme have already demonstrated that transitioning to such a model is not merely theoretical but practically achievable. According to him, pilot projects are currently being implemented, showing tangible progress in integrating circular practices into industrial operations.
He emphasised that embracing a circular economy would not only enhance Bangladesh’s global standing but also help industries adapt to changing international standards and expectations.
