Bangladesh, China move to deepen trade, investment ties

Bangladesh and China have expressed a shared commitment to further strengthening their bilateral relationship, particularly in the areas of trade, investment and connectivity, during high-level discussions held in Beijing on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr Khalilur Rahman met with Wang Huning, chairperson of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), where both sides reaffirmed their dedication to the existing Bangladesh-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed ways to further expand cooperation in key sectors, including economic engagement, infrastructure connectivity, trade expansion, and development-focused initiatives. Both sides emphasised that stronger bilateral ties would contribute not only to mutual economic growth but also to broader regional stability.

The Bangladeshi foreign minister highlighted Dhaka’s growing interest in deepening economic relations with Beijing.

He particularly stressed the importance of increasing trade volumes, attracting greater Chinese investment, and enhancing connectivity projects that support long-term development goals.

In response, Wang Huning reiterated China’s commitment to advancing cooperation with Bangladesh.

He assured continued support for joint initiatives under the existing partnership framework and expressed optimism about expanding collaboration in priority sectors.

The meeting was also attended by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir and Bangladesh Ambassador to China Md Nazmul Islam, reflecting the importance Dhaka places on its relationship with Beijing.

Officials present at the discussions noted that both sides shared a clear intention to build on existing ties and explore new opportunities for cooperation. The talks were seen as part of ongoing efforts to further strengthen diplomatic and economic engagement between the two countries.

Overall, the meeting underscored the continued momentum in Bangladesh-China relations, with both sides signalling readiness to deepen cooperation in strategically important areas.
