The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and German development agency GIZ have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at advancing green industrialisation, sustainability and digital transparency in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector.

The agreement, which also includes an 11-point charter of demands, was formally signed at a ceremony held on Sunday at the BGMEA Complex in the capital.

The initiative is designed to help the country’s apparel industry respond to increasing global economic challenges while ensuring compliance with evolving international trade and sustainability standards.

Under the partnership, BGMEA and GIZ will work together to improve environmental performance across factories, with special emphasis on expanding LEED-certified production facilities and reducing carbon emissions in the sector.

The cooperation will also focus on promoting renewable energy use, improving energy efficiency, and strengthening resource management practices within garment factories to address long-term sustainability and energy concerns.

In addition, both organisations will support enhanced waste management systems and recycling practices, aligning Bangladesh’s apparel sector with global circular economy and sustainable fashion trends.

A major component of the agreement involves digital transformation initiatives. These include introducing digital audit systems for tax compliance and selecting more than 87,000 taxpayers for technology-based transparency monitoring.

The partnership also plans to develop a “one-stop service” platform for licenses and regulatory approvals, aiming to reduce bureaucratic delays and simplify procedures for factory owners.

Industry stakeholders believe the collaboration will strengthen the competitiveness of Bangladesh’s RMG sector in global markets while improving environmental standards and governance systems across the industry.
