The Society for Asian Circular Innovation Network (SACIN), a new regional research and policy-focused think tank, has officially launched its operations in Dhaka, marking the beginning of an initiative aimed at promoting circular economy practices across Asia.
The launch event was held on Saturday at the BCI Conference Room in Dhaka, where speakers highlighted the need for sustainable economic models that reduce waste, improve resource efficiency and support long-term environmental balance.
SACIN Founder President Priti Chakraborty said the organisation is being established to encourage research, innovation, policy engagement and regional cooperation on sustainability challenges. She described the launch as the start of “a new journey and a new responsibility” focused on rethinking traditional production and consumption systems.
The organisation’s guiding slogan, “Think Circular. Innovate Regionally. Impact Globally.” reflects its ambition to position Asia as a global leader in circular economy solutions. While its initial focus will be Bangladesh’s textile and apparel sector, SACIN plans to expand its work into multiple industries, including agriculture, construction, healthcare, plastics, energy, water management and shipbuilding.
Speakers at the event included representatives from the European Union delegation in Bangladesh and EuroCham Bangladesh, along with experts, academics and industry professionals. They discussed the growing environmental pressures facing the region and the need for coordinated responses involving governments, private sector actors and development partners.
SACIN emphasised that the traditional “take–make–dispose” economic model is no longer viable given rising climate and environmental challenges. Instead, it called for systems where materials are reused, waste is reduced and production processes are designed for long-term sustainability.
The think tank also announced several planned initiatives, including a digital data and AI platform, an innovation marketplace, training and certification programmes, an investment platform for circular solutions and an annual regional summit on circular economy and climate issues.
SACIN stated that its work aligns with global development priorities, particularly the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to responsible consumption, climate action and international partnerships.
The organisation has called for collaboration among governments, industries, researchers, youth groups and communities to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable and circular economic future in Asia.
