Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar on Saturday accused the previous Awami League (AL) government of severely damaging Bangladesh’s financial institutions during its 16-year tenure, alleging that large-scale corruption and mismanagement weakened the banking sector and the broader economy.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the 289th branch of Karmasangsthan Bank at Tongibari Upazila in Munshiganj as the chief guest at the programme.
According to Abdus Sattar, billions of takas were looted during the previous administration under the patronage of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resulting in widespread misuse of public funds and erosion of confidence in financial institutions.
He said the current government is now focusing on restoring discipline and rebuilding the country’s banking and financial systems through reforms and accountability.
Abdus Sattar remarked that discussions surrounding banks now often reflect “two contrasting images - one positive and one negative,” and expressed hope that Karmasangsthan Bank would continue to uphold a positive reputation. He urged the bank’s officials and employees to work with honesty, sincerity and dedication to regain public trust.
Referring to the 2024 Mass Uprising, he claimed the former ruling party’s “irregularities and authoritarian behaviour” had alienated not only the general public but also many of its own supporters.
The principal secretary also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman intends to govern the country by following the political ideals of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. He called on citizens to cooperate with the government in rebuilding the nation.
Abdus Sattar further announced several planned welfare initiatives, including the distribution of four crore family cards under which recipient families would receive Tk2,500 per month. He added that farmers would receive farmer cards, while mosque imams and temple priests would also be brought under monthly allowance programmes.
The event was chaired by Karmasangsthan Bank Chairman Dr AFM Matiur Rahman.
Member of Parliament Abdus Salam Azad, Religious Affairs Secretary Munshi Alauddin Al Azad, Financial Institutions Division Secretary Nazma Mobarek, Karmasangsthan Bank Managing Director Arun Kumar Chowdhury, Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi and Superintendent of Munshiganj Police Md Menhajul Alam, among others, were also present at the programme.
