Traffic movement on the Jamuna Bridge and the Dhaka-Tangail highway remained exceptionally busy even after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, as thousands of people continued returning to Dhaka and other urban centres for work.

According to the Jamuna Bridge Authority, more than 40,000 vehicles crossed the bridge in the 24 hours till 12am on Saturday, generating toll revenue of approximately Tk3.14 crore.

Officials said a total of 40,580 vehicles used the bridge during the period, reflecting sustained travel demand following the holiday season. The heavy traffic was largely driven by private-sector employees, factory workers and other travellers returning to their workplaces after celebrating Eid with their families.

Data from the bridge authority showed that 15,448 vehicles travelled towards northern districts, contributing over Tk1.35 crore in toll collections. Meanwhile, 25,132 vehicles crossed the bridge heading towards Dhaka, generating more than Tk1.78 crore in revenue.

Executive Engineer of the Jamuna Bridge Site Office Syed Riaz Uddin said traffic volumes remained significantly above normal levels despite the official end of the Eid vacation.

To ensure smooth vehicle movement, authorities have kept all 18 toll booths operational, with nine booths on each side of the bridge. In addition, two separate booths have been designated exclusively for motorcycles to reduce congestion and speed up toll collection.

Officials reported that vehicle movement remained uninterrupted throughout the period, with no major disruptions despite the increased traffic load.

The Jamuna Bridge serves as one of the country's most important transport links, connecting the capital with northern and northwestern regions. Traffic volumes traditionally rise sharply during major religious festivals, and authorities continue to monitor the situation to facilitate safe and efficient travel for commuters.
