Nearly 983 crore taka spent of Mujib year celebrations: Finance Minister

The government of Bangladesh spent nearly 983 crore taka to celebrate ‘Mujib Year’, the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury shared this information in parliament on Sunday.

The financial details were revealed during a question-and-answer session led by the parliament Speaker, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. The minister was replying to a written question from a Member of Parliament, Mahbubur Rahman Belal, who represents the Rangpur-3 area.

In his question, the lawmaker asked for the total amount of public money spent on various celebration programmes in every district and sub-district. He specifically asked about the costs for making portraits and bases, building bronze, copper, and marble statues of Sheikh Mujib in government offices, and setting up official digital countdown boards. He also asked if the government would take any action regarding this massive spending.

In his reply, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury stated that all ministries and government departments together spent a total of 982 crore 91 lakh 74 thousand taka on these projects.

To back up his statement, the minister also gave parliament a copy of the official expense report showing exactly how the Mujib Year money was used.
