The Government of Bangladesh has signed an agreement with the International Organization for Migration to launch a 1.125 million euro initiative funded by the European Union to manage climate-related migration across South Asia.
The three-year project, titled "Promoting a Comprehensive Approach to Climate Mobility in South Asian Countries", aims to strengthen institutional systems, improve data collection, and promote regional cooperation.
Economic Relations Division Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky and IOM Bangladesh Chief of Mission Dr Laura Tomm Bonde signed the official documents during a formal ceremony in Dhaka.
The initiative will focus on building robust information systems, expanding research networks, and engaging diaspora communities in environmental projects.
It also aims to increase community resilience in areas heavily impacted by environmental changes while encouraging collaboration among neighbouring South Asian states.
Economic Relations Division Secretary Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky emphasised the government's growing commitment to addressing human movement caused by climate factors.
He noted that incorporating climate mobility data into national development policies, disaster management plans, and adaptation strategies remains essential for protecting vulnerable populations.
The secretary praised the international migration agency for its ongoing support in developing evidence-based policies and promoting safe, orderly migration.
IOM Bangladesh Chief of Mission Dr Laura Tomm Bonde expressed gratitude to Bangladeshi authorities and acknowledged the European Union for providing essential financial backing.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with representatives from various partner organisations, attended the signing event.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing national preparedness and creating new opportunities for shared learning across the region.
