NEW DELHI,

India’s largest hydropower facility, the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project on the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border, has begun a critical step toward commissioning.

The NHPC Limited announced that the wet commissioning (a test run) of the first 250 MW unit started on Friday. This process involves flowing water through the turbine to check technical parameters without generating electricity, a test expected to last four to five days.

The project consists of eight 250 MW units, four of which are currently ready for testing. The next step is the synchronisation of at least two units before the plant can begin commercial power generation.

Launched in 2005, the project faced major setbacks when work was suspended in 2011 due to anti-dam protests and concerns about environmental impacts downstream. Following a push from the Prime Minister’s Office, construction resumed in October 2019 after enhanced safety measures were adopted.

NHPC Chairman Bhupender Gupta called the milestone a "shining testament" to the corporation's engineering and a reflection of India’s progress toward a "cleaner, greener, and self-reliant energy future."
