Bangladesh’s government has approved plans for a 220-megawatt (MW) solar power plant that will turn a coastal area into one of the country’s biggest green energy hubs. This is a big step forward in the country’s pursuit of clean energy.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) gave the green light to the project yesterday. It is called the “Construction of Sonagazi 220 MW Solar Power Plant” and will cost about Tk 1,888.10 crore (about $170 million USD).
Increasing the use of renewable energy
Officials have verified the decision, which is a big step towards reducing Bangladesh’s heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels and speeding up the country’s transition to climate-resilient, sustainable electricity generation. The state-owned Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh Ltd. (EGCB) will carry out the project, which is expected to be done by June 2028.
On a huge scale: The new facility will be erected on 634 acres of land in Sonagazi, Feni, next to an existing 75 MW plant. This will make the site a major centre for renewable energy.
Funding Mix: The project would get more than Tk 1,600 crore in foreign aid, which shows that other countries support Bangladesh’s move to renewable energy.
Impact on the National Grid: When the plant is running, it will send 220 MW of clean power into the national grid through the Mirsarai substation. This will make the supply more stable and of higher quality across the country.
Goals for the climate and cutting carbon emissions
A high-ranking official from the Planning Commission said that the project was very important for meeting climate goals at home and abroad.
“The Sonagazi 220 MW solar power plant will be very important in reaching the goal of getting 20 per cent of electricity from renewable sources,” the official said. “Solar power will help cut down on carbon emissions, protect the environment, and make Bangladesh less reliant on unstable global fuel markets.”
The facility will have around 470,000 solar PV modules installed and a big 240 MVA substation built. There will also be a lot of work done on the inside, such as building roads and protecting dikes.
The decision shows that the government is still committed to the long-term goals of the Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan (IEPMP) 2023, which intends to increase the amount of renewable energy it can produce to 38 gigawatts by 2050. Officials said that the project will also help people in the country learn important technical skills in sophisticated renewable technology.
The Sonagazi plant will become one of the largest grid-connected solar projects in Bangladesh thanks to this ECNEC permission. This shows that the government is serious about making the future cleaner, greener, and safer for energy.
