State-run gas distributor Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC has begun emergency repair work to restore gas supply across Dhaka after technical failures caused widespread pressure drops in several parts of the city.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Titas said a gas valve on Mirpur Road and a pipeline beneath the Turag River were damaged in separate incidents, leading to significant disruptions in supply.
According to the company, a four-inch gas valve located in front of Gonobhaban on Mirpur Road burst suddenly on Friday morning, resulting in a major gas leak. Titas said repair teams were immediately deployed to replace the damaged valve.
To contain the leak, several valves across the distribution network were temporarily shut and gas pressure was reduced, the company said. This led to low or near-zero gas pressure in several neighbourhoods, including Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Shyamoli, New Market, Hazaribagh, Gabtoli and nearby areas.
Titas also said the situation was compounded by damage to a gas distribution pipeline laid along the riverbed of the Turag River in the Amin Bazar area. The pipeline was struck by a cargo trawler earlier on Friday.
Although the pipeline was later repaired, water entered the line during the repair process, further reducing gas pressure across the capital.
“Technical efforts are continuing to remove water that entered the damaged pipeline under the Turag River and to ensure gas supply in the city,” the company said.
Titas added that it was working in coordination with other relevant agencies to carry out necessary technical and operational measures to stabilise gas pressure and restore normal supply as quickly as possible.
