The government has announced revised operating hours for compressed natural gas (CNG) stations during Ramadan in an effort to manage low pressure in the national gas distribution network.
Under the new directive, CNG stations across the country will remain closed for six hours daily—from 3:00pm to 9:00pm—beginning on the first day of Ramadan and continuing until 14 March.
The decision was confirmed in an official notification issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. The order, signed by Deputy Secretary Muhammad Nazmul Haque, stated that the temporary adjustment is aimed at stabilising gas supply amid increased household demand during the holy month of Ramadan.
Previously, CNG stations were required to suspend operations for three hours each evening, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The revised schedule effectively doubles the closure period in response to ongoing supply constraints.
However, the government has introduced a temporary relaxation ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr to facilitate smooth travel during the holiday season. From 15 March to 25 March, CNG and fuel stations will be permitted to operate around the clock to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply on highways and major transport routes.
Authorities said that from 26 March, the earlier three-hour evening closure—from 6:00pm to 9:00pm—will be reinstated.
Energy sector officials note that gas consumption typically rises during Ramadan, particularly in residential areas, placing additional strain on the distribution network. The revised operating schedule is intended to prioritise domestic supply while maintaining overall system stability.
The move reflects ongoing efforts by policymakers to balance energy demand during peak seasonal periods without triggering broader supply disruptions.
