Qatar’s state-owned energy giant QatarEnergy has announced the temporary suspension of natural gas production after drone strikes allegedly launched by Iran targeted key industrial facilities in the country.
The announcement came on Monday through an official statement in which the company confirmed that its operational centres in Ras Laffan Industrial City and Mesaieed Industrial City were subjected to military attacks.
In response to the security threat, QatarEnergy declared an immediate halt to the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and related petroleum products as a precautionary measure.
According to the statement, one Iranian drone struck a water tank at a power generation facility in Mesaieed area. Another drone reportedly targeted a fuel installation operated by QatarEnergy in Ras Laffan.
Authorities are currently assessing the extent of physical damage and financial losses resulting from the attacks.
The company said a more detailed report would be released once investigations are completed.
Qatar is the world’s third-largest exporter of natural gas, and QatarEnergy ranks among the largest gas producers globally. Analysts warn that the sudden disruption of production could have notable consequences for international energy markets, particularly at a time of heightened geopolitical tension in the region.
