Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku on Wednesday said Bangladesh must rely on prudent and cost-effective management of its existing fuel reserves as the ongoing war in the Middle East continues to disrupt global energy markets.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat after a meeting with Paul Kapur, US assistant secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, the minister said the country has no immediate alternative but to carefully utilise the fuel currently in stock until the international supply chain stabilises.

“Our only option is to use the fuel we have in hand in a sparing manner until the supply system normalises,” he said, noting that global uncertainty has increased pressure on energy-importing countries like Bangladesh.

Iqbal Hassan Mahmood said the meeting included discussions on managing available energy resources more efficiently during the ongoing crisis.

He added that the government is closely reviewing operational strategies to maintain stability in the power and fuel sectors despite external shocks.

Calling for public cooperation, the minister urged citizens to reduce electricity consumption and avoid unnecessary fuel use.

He advised limiting private vehicle use and cutting down on decorative and non-essential lighting to ease pressure on the system.

“As long as the conflict continues, energy pressure will remain,” he said.

The minister added, “We are trying to run the system efficiently with the resources we have.”

The ministry is expected to issue a detailed press release outlining further measures and guidance to address the situation.
