The government of Bangladesh on Wednesday appealed to citizens to cut back on electricity and fuel consumption in light of uncertainties in global energy markets triggered by instability in the Middle East.

The call came after an emergency review meeting at the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, chaired by Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud.

According to an official handout, the meeting assessed the potential impact of disruptions in international energy supply chains on Bangladesh’s fuel imports.

Officials noted that ongoing unrest in the Middle East has created uncertainty over the timely arrival of fuel shipments. As a result, short-term adjustments in domestic fuel distribution may become necessary to balance demand. A slight decline in electricity generation and fertiliser production is also possible if supply constraints persist.

To mitigate risks, the government has urged the public to adopt conservation measures. Citizens have been requested to avoid decorative and unnecessary lighting and to limit the use of personal vehicles in order to reduce fuel consumption.

Authorities emphasised that special care is being taken to minimise public hardship during the holy month of Ramadan.

The ministry said it has initiated steps to secure fuel from all available sources to maintain stability in supply.

Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to prevent illegal sale of diesel and petrol in the open market. District administrations, police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have also been directed to intensify vigilance against fuel smuggling.

The government has sought patience and cooperation from the public, expressing confidence that collective efforts will help the country navigate any temporary energy challenges.

State Minister Aninda Islam Amit, senior officials of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, and the heads of BPC and BPDB were also present at the meeting.
