Bangladesh Shadharon Nagorik Shamaj, a civil society platform, on Saturday called on all stakeholders to remain alert to prevent any artificial fuel shortage in the country amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement, the platform’s convener Mohiuddin Ahmed urged people not to spread panic over uncertainties surrounding global fuel supplies resulting from the regional conflict.
He warned that some dishonest traders might attempt to exploit the international situation to create an artificial crisis in the local market for personal gain.
The organisation also noted that disruptions in fuel supply management could arise if there are missteps or unplanned decisions by state energy agencies, including the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and Petrobangla.
Despite the current concerns, the statement said that according to various sources, the country has sufficient fuel reserves at present.
Bangladesh Shadharon Nagorik Shamaj, therefore, appealed to the public and relevant stakeholders not to spread rumours or create unnecessary fear that could lead to panic.
The platform further urged the government authorities to maintain transparency in fuel stock and supply management, strengthen market monitoring, and take strict action against traders attempting to manipulate the market.
It also called on all concerned to act responsibly to safeguard the country’s energy security and protect public interests during the ongoing global uncertainty.
