The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has increased patrols and surveillance along the border in Benapole in an effort to prevent the smuggling of fuel amid rising international prices and global market uncertainty.
Officials said additional BGB personnel have been deployed at several sensitive points along the border to strengthen monitoring and prevent the illegal movement of diesel and petrol across the frontier.
Lieutenant Colonel Saifullah Siddiqui, commanding officer of the BGB-49 Battalion, said the heightened measures were introduced as a precaution following the recent fluctuations in global fuel markets.
According to him, both patrol and intelligence operations have been intensified to ensure that smugglers cannot take advantage of the current situation.
Sources within the battalion said special monitoring has been underway since Thursday night at key areas including the Benapole Land Port, as well as nearby border points in Sharsha and Chowgachha upazilas of Jashore. Temporary checkpoints have been set up at several strategic locations where vehicles and cargo are being inspected for any suspicious activity.
BGB members are also carrying out regular patrols along the border areas while intelligence units closely monitor movements that could be linked to smuggling operations.
In addition, trucks entering and leaving through the Benapole Land Port gate - including both domestic and Indian vehicles - are being subjected to thorough checks to ensure that no fuel is being transported illegally.
Lieutenant Colonel Siddiqui said strict vigilance is being maintained across the border zone.
“Our patrols and intelligence activities have been strengthened to prevent any attempt to smuggle fuel. All suspicious movements and vehicles are under close observation,” he added.
Authorities believe the increased monitoring will help deter smuggling attempts and maintain stability in the domestic fuel market.
