Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a meeting on Saturday with Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku at his Tejgaon office in the capital, focusing on reducing costs and ensuring more efficient management in the power and energy sector.

The meeting took place at 2:30pm as part of the Prime Minister’s official schedule, even during the weekly holiday.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the discussion centred on strategies to cut unnecessary expenditure in the energy sector, improve operational efficiency and strengthen overall management to ensure sustainable supply.

Sources said both sides reviewed the current status of power generation, fuel imports and overall energy pricing mechanisms.

They also discussed possible measures to enhance transparency and reduce system losses in electricity distribution and fuel management.

The Prime Minister reportedly stressed the importance of adopting practical reforms to lower operational costs while maintaining uninterrupted energy supply for industries, businesses and households.

He directed the ministry to identify areas where efficiency can be improved and waste minimised.

Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood briefed the Prime Minister on ongoing initiatives in the power and energy sector and presented updates on fuel supply, electricity production and reserve management.

He also discussed future plans to strengthen coordination among relevant agencies to ensure better resource utilisation.

The meeting comes at a time when global energy markets remain volatile, requiring careful planning and prudent financial management to maintain stability in the domestic energy sector.

Earlier, the Prime Minister held a meeting at 12pm with Dr Nargis Akter, director general of the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, to discuss expanding diversified uses of jute products and strengthening their market potential.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also issued a message on the occasion of International Women’s Day, reiterating his government’s commitment to ensuring equal rights and security for women.

He stressed strict measures to prevent cyber-bullying and online harassment and emphasised women’s participation in education, economy, health and politics.

He highlighted initiatives such as the introduction of the ‘Family Card’ for women’s economic empowerment and pledged free education for women up to postgraduate level, expanded digital learning facilities and support for girls’ education.

It is to be mentioned that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman continued his official duties at his Tejgaon office in the capital on Saturday, maintaining his recent practice of working even during the weekly holiday.

According to a Prime Minister’s Office press release, since taking oath on 17 February, the Prime Minister has been attending office on three consecutive Saturdays to oversee government activities and key policy matters.
