Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury on Sunday called on all citizens to use electricity and energy responsibly, highlighting the importance of conservation during the ongoing national power management efforts.
“The Prime Minister himself has reduced the use of lights and air conditioners in his office, sending a clear message to everyone to save electricity,” he said while addressing a meeting of the District Law and Order Committee at the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner’s office.
The minister stressed that careful use of power in homes, offices, markets, and public spaces could help ease pressure on the national grid and prevent outages, particularly during peak hours and the upcoming Ramadan-Eid period.
Ariful urged government offices, private institutions and households to switch off unnecessary lighting, fans and air conditioners, and to prioritise energy-efficient appliances wherever possible.
“Every effort counts. Conserving energy today ensures a stable and sufficient supply for everyone tomorrow,” he added, emphasising public cooperation in national energy-saving campaigns.
The minister also highlighted that Sylhet, being a hub for expatriates and economic activity, must set an example in adopting energy-saving practices.
He encouraged local authorities to monitor consumption in public offices and markets to promote responsible usage.
Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam chaired the meeting, and officials from various government departments attended, discussing strategies to support both energy efficiency and safety measures during the festive season.
By prioritising power and energy conservation, the minister said, the country can better manage its resources amid rising demand and global supply pressures.
