The Energy and Mineral Resources Division has requested the Cabinet Division to instruct deputy commissioners (DCs) across Bangladesh to conduct mobile court drives to prevent illegal hoarding of fuel and sales at prices higher than the government-approved rates.

In a letter sent to the cabinet secretary on Sunday, the division said recent media reports indicate that some unscrupulous traders are illegally stockpiling fuel in an attempt to create an artificial shortage in the market amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

According to the letter, the government has already taken measures to maintain stability in the domestic fuel market by fixing the quantity of fuel that can be supplied based on the type of vehicle. The step was aimed at ensuring fair distribution and preventing panic buying.

Despite these measures, there have been allegations that some petrol pumps and filling stations are selling fuel above the government-set prices. In addition, certain traders are reportedly hoarding excess quantities to gain higher profits, selling fuel in the open market outside authorised channels and engaging in smuggling activities.

The Energy Division warned that such practices could disrupt the supply chain, create artificial scarcity and increase pressure on the fuel market at a time when global energy prices remain volatile due to geopolitical tensions.

In this situation, the division urged the cabinet secretary to issue necessary directives to DCs across the country so that mobile courts can take immediate action against those involved in illegal hoarding, overpricing, unauthorised sales and smuggling.

Officials said the move aims to protect consumers, ensure fair pricing and maintain a stable fuel supply across the country.
