Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives State Minister Mir Shah Alam has recommended moving the headquarters of Northern Electricity Supply Company PLC (NESCO) from Rajshahi to Bogura to improve operational efficiency in the northern region.
In a demi-official (DO) letter sent to Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku, the state minister emphasised the urgency of the relocation, citing delays in service and administrative tasks due to the current location in Rajshahi.
He highlighted that NESCO’s operational area stretches from Tentulia Upazila in Panchagarh in the north to Chapainawabganj in the southwest and Pabna in the southeast, making Bogura, situated between Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, a more central and strategic location.
“Relocating the head office to Bogura would optimise state resources, reduce costs, improve administrative mobility and enhance customer service. I request urgent approval and action,” he wrote in the 25 February letter.
Following the proposal, the Power Division established a feasibility committee on 3 March to examine the suggestion and submit recommendations within a month.
The panel is chaired by Mohammad Sanaul Haque, additional secretary of the Power Division’s coordination subdivision, with a representative from the Power Development Board as a member.
The proposal has raised concerns in Rajshahi.
Jamat Khan, general secretary of Rajshahi Rakhkha Shangram Parishad, warned that moving offices from the divisional city to Bogura has historical precedent during BNP rule and could damage government credibility.
He urged that NESCO’s headquarters remain in Rajshahi, describing the city as the nation’s education hub.
NESCO Managing Director Moshiur Rahman said the company has not received any official notification and is awaiting government direction.
Deputy Secretary Farjana Khanom confirmed the committee’s work, stating it will submit its report in one month, after which a final decision will be made.
