The Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity has called on authorities to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply for the transport sector ahead of Eid, warning that ongoing rationing could disrupt travel and trigger fare hikes.

The association’s Secretary General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said around 1.5 crore people are expected to leave Dhaka and surrounding districts for their hometowns, while 3-4 crore travellers may move across the country during the festive season.

“The current fuel ceiling may prevent vehicles from completing required trips, creating chaos for passengers,” he said.

The organisation estimated that Eid travel would generate massive demand: 40 lakh trips by launches, 30 lakh by CNG-run auto-rickshaws, 80 lakh by human haulers, 60,000 by cars and microbuses, and around 30 lakh trips by long-distance buses and minibuses. Dhaka city buses could operate 40 lakh trips, while ride-sharing motorcycles may carry passengers in 2.5 crore trips.

Mozammel Haque Chowdhury also warned that some operators might exploit the shortage by charging excessive fares, adding to passengers’ hardships.

The association urged the government to temporarily lift fuel rationing and maintain continuous supply until the end of Eid, ensuring smooth travel for millions of passengers nationwide.
