Bangladesh has formally requested a temporary waiver from the United States to import Russian oil, following a similar exemption granted to India, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Wednesday.

The move comes amid rising global energy concerns fuelled by the ongoing Middle East tensions.

“We explained to the US representatives that allowing Bangladesh a similar waiver would significantly support our economy. They informed us that the matter will be forwarded to Washington, and we will await their response,” Khasru told reporters after a meeting with the US ambassador to Bangladesh at the Planning Ministry office in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

The discussion centred on the current volatility in the international energy market, particularly in oil and gas supplies.

The minister added that broader topics, including boosting trade, investment and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the US, were also reviewed.

Khasru further noted that institutional capacity building for government bodies was a key part of the conversation.

However, he clarified that no concrete decisions were made regarding a possible trade agreement with the US.

“Trade agreements involve negotiations between countries. At this stage, no specific conclusions were reached, but we are exploring ways to advance Bangladesh’s interests,” he said.

Responding to questions about contingency planning, the finance minister emphasised that the government is preparing for multiple scenarios.

“Whether the conflict in the Middle East is short-term, medium-term, or prolonged, we are considering every possibility and planning accordingly. These scenarios were discussed thoroughly today,” Khasru added.

The request highlights Bangladesh’s proactive approach to safeguarding its energy supply and stabilising the domestic economy amid global uncertainties in oil and gas markets.
