The government of Bangladesh has announced the withdrawal of fuel rationing for petrol, octane and diesel, effective immediately, in a move aimed at ensuring smooth travel during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holidays.

A formal notification regarding the decision will be issued on Sunday, confirmed Monir Hossain Chowdhury, joint secretary (operations) at the Energy and Mineral Resources Division.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “For now, fuel supply and sales will continue normally, as they were prior to the onset of global concerns following the Iran conflict. This measure has been taken keeping Eid travel in mind.”

Rationing had been introduced on 6 March after panic buying triggered by the Middle East crisis led to fears of fuel shortages. At that time, motorcycles were limited to 2 litres per day, SUVs and microbuses to 20-25 litres, pickups and local buses to 70-80 litres, and long-distance buses, trucks, covered vans and container trucks to 200-220 litres per day.

A few days later, the limit for ride-sharing vehicles was raised from 2 litres to 5 litres per day, and the overall rationing level was reduced from 25 per cent to 15 per cent.

With the lifting of restrictions, motorists, transport operators, and logistics services can now purchase fuel without limits, helping to ensure smooth road and transport operations during the holiday season.

Officials stressed that adequate supply has been maintained and the government will continue monitoring the situation closely to prevent shortages.
