Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani on Wednesday said Bangladesh currently has sufficient fuel reserves, with the government taking steps to further strengthen supply stability following directives from the Prime Minister.

Briefing reporters after a cabinet meeting at the Secretariat, he noted that fuel stock levels have improved significantly.

“Previously, we maintained reserves for around 15 days, but now we have nearly a month’s supply,” he said.

He added that the government aims to expand the reserves further as confidence in the energy sector improves, enabling the country to better absorb any future shocks.

Nasimul Ghani said an earlier meeting on the energy situation was held with ministers and relevant officials, where necessary measures were discussed in line with the Prime Minister’s instructions.

Explaining the scheduling change, he said cabinet meetings are usually held on Thursdays, but this week’s session was brought forward as 26 March coincides with major national programmes.

The cabinet discussed five agenda items during the meeting. At the outset, members paid tribute to the victims of the 25 March genocide carried out by Pakistani occupation forces in 1971, recalling that the incident led to the declaration of independence and the beginning of the Liberation War. Prayers were offered in memory of the martyrs.

Among the key decisions, the cabinet approved in principle and in final form a draft amendment to the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Supplementary Duty Act 2026.

It also gave approval to two financial bills related to expenditures for the fiscal year ending in July, along with revised estimates. Another financial ordinance amendment was approved as part of the 2025–26 fiscal framework under constitutional provisions.

Additionally, Nasimul Ghani said five ordinances issued during the previous administration will be converted into acts and placed before Parliament after completing necessary procedures.
