A growing fuel shortage in Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj is severely affecting transport operations, causing hardship for drivers, passengers, and businesses alike.

With diesel supplies running low, many truck and bus operators are struggling to complete their trips on time. The situation has disrupted the movement of goods and delayed essential deliveries, raising concerns among transport workers and traders.

Transport officials said numerous vehicles are being forced to halt mid-journey due to insufficient fuel, leaving passengers stranded for extended periods. In many cases, commuters are unable to find alternative means of transportation, worsening the situation, especially for those traveling on urgent matters.

A recent visit to 14 fuel stations in the area revealed a grim picture. Most pumps had displayed notices declaring shortages of petrol, octane, and diesel. While a handful of stations were supplying limited quantities of diesel, many remained closed, barricaded with ropes and bamboo to control crowds.

Drivers described the ordeal as exhausting and costly. Truck driver Amjad Hossain Molla said that he was transporting essential goods from Kanchpur to Chakaria in Cox’s Bazar but faced severe delays as stations were restricting sales to just 10 litres per vehicle. This forced drivers to visit multiple pumps, increasing travel time and risking spoilage of perishable goods.

Public transport has also been hit hard. Bus driver Md Sabuj Mia said irregular fuel availability is disrupting schedules, with buses stopping repeatedly to refuel. This has led to passenger frustration and, at times, heated arguments.

Motorcyclists are facing even greater challenges, with long queues and limited supplies making it difficult to obtain fuel. Shafiqul Islam, a pharmaceutical worker, said he was unable to return to Chandpur after Eid as he failed to secure petrol despite waiting for hours.

Despite these ground realities, Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Raihan Kabir said that there is no official fuel crisis.

He added that authorities are monitoring the situation and warned that strict action will be taken against any station found hoarding fuel or engaging in irregularities.
