A dispute over fuel supply turned fatal when a filling station manager was allegedly run over by a truck following an altercation with its driver on the Kalna-Jashore highway in Narail Sadar Upazila early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Nahid Sardar, 35, manager of Tanvir Filling Station and resident of Peroli Village under Tularampur Union.
He died on the spot, while his colleague Jihadul Molla, 29, a resident of the same area, was critically injured in the incident.
According to staff at the filling station, the incident began late Saturday night when a truck driver, identified as Sujat, arrived at the station seeking fuel. An argument soon broke out between the driver and Nahid over the availability and supply of fuel.
Witnesses said the situation escalated quickly, with the driver becoming enraged after failing to obtain fuel. At one point, he allegedly threatened to run over the manager. CCTV footage later confirmed that the truck remained parked at the station even after the dispute.
After completing his duties around 2:10am, Nahid left the station on a motorcycle with Jihadul. Shortly afterward, the truck reportedly chased them along the highway before running them over.
Jihadul was first taken to Narail District Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Workers at the filling station and locals believe the attack was a direct consequence of the earlier fuel dispute, and have demanded strict punishment for the truck driver.
Police said on information, they recovered the body and sent it to Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Officer-in-Charge of Tularampur Highway Police Station Sheikh Sekendar Ali confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.
