The government of Bangladesh has decided to eliminate the monthly rental or meter charge levied on prepaid electricity meters, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku announced on Sunday.

The decision comes after sustained complaints from electricity consumers, who argued that the charges were burdensome and unfair, particularly since many had already covered the cost of the meters years ago.

Speaking to reporters, the minister said, “We have received numerous complaints from consumers regarding the monthly charges on prepaid meters. After careful consideration, the government has decided to withdraw these charges to make electricity services more consumer-friendly.”

He added that the change would be implemented soon, bringing immediate relief to households and businesses using prepaid meters.

Currently, electricity users with prepaid meters pay a fixed monthly rental fee, which many consumers and civic groups have protested, claiming it continued unnecessarily long after the meters had been fully paid off. Social media platforms and public campaigns had amplified these concerns, putting pressure on authorities to reconsider the policy.

The minister emphasised that the government remains committed to ensuring affordable and fair electricity services for all citizens.

He said the withdrawal of the monthly meter charge is part of a broader effort to improve customer satisfaction and promote transparency in the power sector.

Consumers have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a positive step towards easing financial pressure and making electricity access more equitable.
