Manager of Jamuna Oil Company Limited’s Mongla depot Md Al Amin Khan has been suspended following the discovery of significant discrepancies in diesel stock during a surprise inspection early Sunday.
The irregularities were detected during a joint drive carried out by officials from Bagerhat District administration, Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard, police, and representatives of the oil company. Following the findings, the concerned storage tanks were immediately sealed.
According to inspection reports, a mismatch of 12,613 litres of diesel was identified, raising serious concerns among authorities.
The discrepancy was most prominent in one tank, where an unusually high surplus was found, prompting suspicions of possible smuggling or other unlawful activities.
During the inspection, depot manager Al Amin Khan was not present. Instead, temporary computer operator Faruk Hossain provided the official stock records.
A detailed measurement of the tanks revealed that Tank 1 contained 932 litres more diesel than recorded, Tank 9 had an excess of 12,818 litres, while Tank 14 showed a shortage of 1,137 litres. Officials described the large discrepancy in Tank 9 as particularly alarming.
Jamuna Oil Managing Director Md Amir Masud confirmed that the manager has been temporarily suspended and issued a show-cause notice.
He added that the company has taken the matter seriously and initiated a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the irregularities.
Authorities are now examining whether the discrepancies are linked to organised malpractice within the fuel supply chain.
