State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam assured Parliament on Monday that Bangladesh is currently not facing any energy crisis, despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Responding to a supplementary question from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem (Dhaka-14) in the Jatiya Sangsad, Shama said the government is taking comprehensive measures to ensure uninterrupted energy supply and safeguard the interests of Bangladeshi citizens working abroad.
She explained that under the guidance of the Prime Minister, the government has diversified energy import sources beyond the Middle East and is actively exploring alternative supply channels to maintain a stable fuel supply.
“There is no energy crisis in Bangladesh at the moment,” she said, noting that the Prime Minister has convened several meetings with relevant authorities to secure energy from multiple sources.
Shama also highlighted the government’s priority on the safety of Bangladeshi expatriates, particularly in the Middle East.
She reported that Bangladesh missions in the region are monitoring the situation round the clock, assisting citizens in affected areas, and coordinating repatriation efforts.
“186 Bangladeshis have been safely brought back from Tehran, Iran, through a government-chartered flight,” she added.
The state minister emphasised that Bangladesh maintains ongoing diplomatic communication with relevant countries and international partners to ensure both energy security and citizen safety.
She reaffirmed that the government is taking proactive measures to address any emerging challenges in energy supply and expatriate welfare.
