Authorities have seized 5,375 litres of illegally stored diesel during a late-night raid in a border area of Meherpur Sadar upazila, as part of ongoing efforts to curb fuel hoarding and illegal trading.

The operation was conducted by a joint team of the Detective Branch of Police and Meherpur Sadar Police Station between 11:30 pm and 1:30 am in Dakshin Shalika Village.

During the raid, law enforcement officials recovered 5,375 litres of diesel stored in 26 barrels inside a concealed warehouse. Police said the fuel was kept without proper documentation, indicating illegal stockpiling.

One suspect, Abu Sufian, owner of a local business named Farabi Traders, was arrested in connection with the case. He is a resident of Dakshin Shalika village in Meherpur.

According to police sources, the raid was carried out based on intelligence reports regarding unauthorised fuel storage in the area.

Officer-in-Charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station Humayun Kabir said preliminary findings suggest the accused had been hoarding diesel with the intention of selling it at inflated prices.

“He could not provide any valid documents for the seized fuel,” the officer said.

Authorities said such operations are part of broader enforcement measures to ensure market discipline, prevent fuel hoarding and protect consumers from artificial shortages.

Energy analysts say increased monitoring in border regions remains critical to preventing smuggling and maintaining stability in Bangladesh’s fuel supply chain.
