The Malaysian government has announced plans to implement a work-from-home policy for civil servants in a bid to reduce energy consumption and ease pressure on the country’s fuel and power resources.

The policy will take effect from 15 April, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed in a statement.

The directive will apply to employees across all government ministries, agencies, and government-linked companies, aiming to curb daily energy use and support the sustainability of national energy supplies.

“The goal is to reduce fuel consumption and ensure that energy resources remain sufficient for essential needs,” the Prime Minister said.

The government has emphasised that further details on the work-from-home arrangements, including schedules and monitoring measures, will be shared in the coming weeks. State-owned oil company Petronas, along with other relevant authorities, is coordinating efforts to secure adequate fuel and electricity supplies during the transition period.

Malaysia is currently allocating nearly $1 billion per month in subsidies to keep domestic fuel prices lower, amid rising global energy costs. Officials hope that by encouraging remote work, energy demand in offices and government facilities will decrease, reducing strain on the national grid and cutting overall fuel consumption.

Analysts say the policy reflects a broader trend of energy-conscious measures across the region, where governments are balancing economic activity with sustainable resource management. The government has called on private sector organisations to consider similar measures to further promote energy efficiency.
