Authorities in Bangladesh have uncovered an illegal fuel storage operation in a residential area of Noakhali, where a rooftop water tank was being used to store diesel, prompting concerns over public safety and regulatory enforcement.

The discovery was made during a late-night operation in Subarnachar, following intelligence reports of suspicious activity. Officials found approximately 750 litres of diesel inside a tank normally used for household water storage, indicating a deliberate attempt to conceal the fuel in a densely populated neighbourhood.

Local residents said the tank had reportedly been used for fuel storage for some time, although the situation only recently came to light, causing alarm in the community. The presence of a large quantity of flammable material in a residential setting has been widely criticised as highly dangerous, particularly in the absence of proper safety measures.

Authorities believe the fuel may have been stored for illegal resale, reflecting broader concerns about informal fuel trading practices that can emerge during periods of supply disruption or price fluctuations. Such activities not only pose fire hazards but can also undermine regulated fuel markets.

Following the operation, the confiscated diesel was sold immediately at official depot rates to a licensed trader. The individual responsible was fined under the Petroleum Act 2016 for the unlawful storage of hazardous materials, with the penalty collected on the spot.

Officials have indicated that enforcement actions will continue as part of wider efforts to ensure compliance with fuel storage regulations and to reduce safety risks in residential areas. The incident highlights the challenges authorities face in monitoring illegal fuel activities, particularly at a local level, as energy supply pressures persist.
