A Chinese-flagged oil tanker carrying over 34,000 tonnes of diesel from Malaysia has arrived at Chattogram Port’s Dolphin Jetty for unloading.
The vessel, Shan Gang Fa Jian, docked at Dolphin Jetty No. 6 in Patenga at around 1pm on Sunday, according to Syed Refayet Hamim, secretary of the Chattogram Port Authority. Prior to docking, the ship had anchored at the port’s outer anchorage on Friday night at approximately 10pm after leaving Malaysia.
Nazrul Islam, managing partner of the local agent Pride Shipping Lines, explained that four lightering operations were conducted over the weekend to reduce the vessel’s draft and make it safe for berthing at the jetty.
These operations involved transferring part of the diesel to smaller vessels to allow the ship to dock without risk. The remaining diesel is expected to be fully discharged within the next two days, officials said.
The arrival of the Malaysian diesel shipment comes as part of ongoing efforts to maintain adequate fuel supplies amid global energy market fluctuations. Authorities are also exploring opportunities to import fuel oil from additional countries to diversify sources and ensure a steady supply for domestic consumption.
Port officials confirmed that all necessary safety and environmental protocols were followed during the docking and unloading process, highlighting the efficiency and preparedness of Chattogram Port in handling large-scale fuel shipments.
