Bangladesh has imported an additional 8,000 metric tonnes of diesel from India, reinforcing cross-border energy cooperation through the Bangladesh–India Friendship Pipeline amid continued efforts to stabilise domestic fuel supply.

The consignment was transported from India’s Numaligarh Refinery and delivered through the pipeline network to the Parbatipur depot of Padma Oil Company Limited, according to official sources.

Meghna Petroleum Limited Operations Manager Kazi Md Robiul Alam said pumping of diesel from Numaligarh Refinery began at midnight on April 7 and the full shipment reached Parbatipur at midnight on Friday. He confirmed that distribution of the imported fuel is currently underway.

He said diesel imports from India are part of an ongoing supply arrangement, and further shipments are planned depending on operational conditions. He added that if conditions remain stable, another 5,000 metric tonnes of diesel is expected to be imported starting April 17.

Parbatipur depot deputy manager Md Ahsan Habib Chowdhury confirmed receipt of the consignment, noting that the facility currently maintains sufficient diesel stock for distribution.

Officials said Bangladesh has now imported a total of 25,000 metric tonnes of diesel from India in four phases through the pipeline system, including the latest shipment. Previous deliveries included 10,000 metric tonnes in March and 7,000 metric tonnes in early April.

The Bangladesh–India Friendship Pipeline, operational since 2021, facilitates the steady supply of refined diesel from India’s Numaligarh Refinery in Assam to northern Bangladesh, strengthening regional energy security and reducing logistical dependency on longer fuel transport routes.

Energy officials say the pipeline continues to play a key role in ensuring stable diesel availability for transport, agriculture and industrial demand as Bangladesh manages fluctuating global energy market conditions.
