Bangladesh has called for deeper energy cooperation with Algeria to strengthen long-term energy security, as both countries move to expand collaboration in hydrocarbons and other strategic sectors.

The issue was discussed during a meeting between Shama Obaed Islam and Algerian Ambassador Abdelouahab Saidani at the foreign ministry in Dhaka on Monday, according to an official statement.

Bangladesh welcomed Algeria’s interest in expanding cooperation in hydrocarbons, highlighting the importance of diversifying energy sources amid evolving global supply challenges. The discussions form part of Dhaka’s broader strategy to secure reliable energy partnerships and reduce exposure to external market volatility.

Both sides reaffirmed their longstanding bilateral relationship and explored opportunities to expand trade and investment. Key sectors identified included energy, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding and manpower, signalling a wider economic partnership beyond hydrocarbons.

The state minister also emphasised the role of education and institutional cooperation, welcoming progress towards establishing a Joint Consultative Commission to formalise bilateral engagement. She underlined the need for regular dialogue and high-level visits to sustain momentum in relations.

The Algerian ambassador reiterated his country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors, including energy, agriculture, education and the recruitment of skilled and semi-skilled workers from Bangladesh. He said Algeria viewed Bangladesh as a key partner in South Asia.

Dhaka also highlighted the importance of enhancing people-to-people connections through cultural and sports exchanges, alongside exploring a possible mutual visa waiver arrangement to facilitate easier movement between the two countries.

The meeting reflects a growing focus on energy diplomacy as Bangladesh seeks to secure stable fuel supplies and long-term partnerships, while Algeria looks to expand its global engagement in hydrocarbons and related sectors.
