Bangladesh is set to import an additional 17,000 metric tonnes of refined diesel from India in April through the Friendship Pipeline as part of efforts to maintain stable fuel supply and strengthen national energy security.

According to Meghna Petroleum Limited Manager Kazi Md Rabiul Alam, the import will be carried out in phases during the month.

He said on Wednesday that 5,000 tonnes of diesel are scheduled to be pumped through the pipeline on Thursday and are expected to reach the Parbatipur depot in Dinajpur within four to five days. The remaining 12,000 tonnes will arrive before the end of the month.

He further explained that the rest of the consignment will be supplied in two additional batches of 7,000 tonnes and 5,000 tonnes respectively, ensuring a steady flow of fuel into the country’s distribution network.

Earlier, Bangladesh received 8,000 metric tonnes of diesel through the same pipeline, which reached the Parbatipur depot last Friday. In March, another 17,000 metric tonnes of diesel were also imported via the Friendship Pipeline route.

The fuel is being sourced from Numaligarh Refinery in India’s Assam, and transported directly to Padma Oil PLC’s storage facility in northern Bangladesh through the cross-border pipeline system.

Officials said this pipeline-based import system helps reduce transportation costs significantly while ensuring faster and more reliable fuel delivery.

Authorities have emphasised that the continued supply through the pipeline is helping maintain adequate fuel stock, particularly in the northern districts of the country.

Officials also assured that the overall fuel supply situation remains stable, with no risk of any immediate shortage in the market.
