The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has announced a fresh upward adjustment in the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at the consumer level, raising the cost of a 12kg cylinder by Tk212 amid ongoing volatility in the global energy market.

According to a notice issued by BERC on Sunday afternoon, the new retail price of a 12kg LPG cylinder has been fixed at Tk1,940, up from the previous rate of Tk1,728. The revised price came into effect from Sunday evening, prompting immediate concern among consumers already facing rising living costs.

Officials said the adjustment reflects changes in the international market, where fuel prices have remained unstable in recent weeks due to geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. Bangladesh imports a significant portion of its LPG, making domestic prices sensitive to global fluctuations.

This marks a notable single-phase increase, as the price of the same cylinder was last revised on 2 April when it was set at Tk1,728 for the current month. The latest hike of Tk212 represents one of the sharpest recent adjustments in household LPG pricing.

Market analysts say the increase is likely to put additional pressure on household budgets, particularly for middle- and low-income families who rely on LPG for cooking. Transport and small businesses using cylinders are also expected to feel the impact through higher operating costs.

BERC, however, has indicated that price adjustments are made in line with import costs and international contract prices, which are reviewed on a monthly basis under the existing pricing formula.

The commission is expected to continue monitoring the global situation before making further adjustments in the coming months.
