Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku has told Parliament that outstanding payments to government and private power plants, including electricity imports, have climbed to Tk52,300.88 crore as of 9 April 2026.

Responding to a starred question from ruling BNP lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain (Dhaka-18), the minister provided a detailed breakdown of the arrears in the Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday.

He said Tk11,634.06 crore is currently due to Petrobangla against gas supply bills from both public and private entities. In addition, unpaid dues for electricity imported from India stand at Tk3,891.55 crore.

The minister also said Independent Power Producer (IPP) plants running on gas and furnace oil are owed Tk17,357.68 crore in capacity and fuel payments. For coal-based joint venture and IPP plants, outstanding payments for coal supply and capacity charges amount to Tk15,452.91 crore.

He further informed the House that government-owned power companies are yet to receive Tk5,623.03 crore in capacity and fuel-related payments, while Tk198.94 crore remains unpaid as hauling charges.

In addition to these liabilities, the minister revealed that power sector entities have taken bank loans totalling Tk1,49,311.26 crore.

He did not provide further comments but acknowledged the growing financial pressure on the country’s power generation and supply system.
