The Supreme Court of Bangladesh has decided to introduce virtual court proceedings in the High Court Division for two days each week as part of efforts to conserve fuel and electricity amid ongoing global economic pressures.

According to an official notification issued by the High Court Division on Sunday, the decision has been taken in line with the Information and Communication Technology Use in Courts Act, 2020 and relevant practice directions already in force.

The notification, signed by Registrar Muhammad Nurul Amin Biplob, outlines the procedural steps to implement the initiative.

Under the new arrangement, court proceedings in designated benches will be conducted virtually using online platforms for two days each week. The move is aimed at reducing physical presence in courtrooms, thereby cutting down on transportation-related fuel consumption and overall electricity usage in court facilities.

To ensure smooth implementation, all bench officers serving in single benches of the High Court Division have been instructed to collect their Zoom IDs and passwords by 20 April. Additionally, at least one bench officer from each division bench has been directed to complete the same process within the stipulated timeframe.

Officials said the initiative is part of broader measures being taken across various sectors to cope with the current energy situation and promote efficient resource management. The judiciary had previously adopted virtual court systems during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the renewed use of such platforms is expected to help maintain judicial activities without disruption while contributing to national energy-saving efforts.
