Gas supply in Dhaka and nearby districts is gradually improving after a brief disruption at a floating LNG terminal in Maheshkhali of Cox’s Bazar, which had temporarily halted operations due to a technical fault.
Officials from Petrobangla said the terminal operated by Excelerate Energy stopped gas transmission around 6am on Tuesday after developing a technical problem. The issue was resolved by midday, after which gas supply from the terminal resumed.
The temporary shutdown caused a significant fall in gas pressure across several areas, including parts of southern Dhaka, Gazaria, Meghnaghat, Sonargaon and Narayanganj, leading to widespread inconvenience for households, businesses and industries.
Earlier in the day, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC had warned of severe pressure drops in its service areas, noting that the national grid had lost around 400 million cubic feet of LNG supply due to the outage.
According to officials, LNG imports normally contribute around 35 per cent of Bangladesh’s daily gas supply. Before the disruption, LNG terminals were supplying roughly 950 million cubic feet per day, but output dropped to about 550 million cubic feet during the shutdown period.
During the outage, the second floating LNG terminal operated by Summit Group continued functioning at full capacity, helping reduce the overall impact on the national grid.
Energy officials said gas supply has now started to recover steadily and is expected to return to normal levels soon.
They added that the situation is likely to bring relief to residential consumers as well as industrial and commercial users who were affected by the temporary shortage.
