Bangladesh’s energy security and the advancement of its nuclear power ambitions were at the forefront of discussions when Alexey Likhachev, head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday.
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, where both sides reviewed progress on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP), a key component of the country’s long-term energy strategy.
During the discussion, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of diversifying Bangladesh’s energy mix to ensure stable and sustainable power supply.
He expressed appreciation for Russia’s continued technical and technological support in implementing the Rooppur project, which is expected to play a crucial role in meeting growing electricity demand.
Likhachev reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s nuclear energy development, assuring that cooperation would continue as the country moves closer to operationalising its first nuclear power facility. He expressed confidence that the remaining construction and technical work on the Rooppur plant would be completed within the scheduled timeframe.
The talks highlighted nuclear energy as a strategic pillar in Bangladesh’s efforts to enhance energy security, reduce dependence on conventional fuels, and support long-term economic growth.
Senior government officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and other advisers and ministers related to technology and energy sectors, as well as Russian Ambassador Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin, were present at the meeting.
