Bangladesh has renewed its call for accelerated international efforts towards nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, stressing the urgent need for nuclear-armed states to fulfil their commitments under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

The appeal was made during the 11th Review Conference of the treaty held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, according to an official statement received in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Speaking at the general debate, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury said that even after nearly eight decades since the establishment of the United Nations, the global vision of a world free from nuclear weapons remains unfulfilled.

He warned that the continued existence and spread of nuclear weapons pose a serious threat to global peace and stability, while also undermining sustainable development goals worldwide. According to him, the persistence of nuclear arsenals reflects a gap between international commitments and actual progress.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s longstanding position, the envoy noted that the country has consistently supported both nuclear and conventional disarmament initiatives. Despite being located in a region with nuclear-armed states, Bangladesh has chosen to remain non-nuclear, demonstrating its commitment to peace and global security.

He called on nuclear-weapon states to honour their legal obligations under Article VI of the NPT, which mandates progress toward disarmament. He also stressed the importance of universalising international disarmament agreements to ensure broader global participation.

Reaffirming Bangladesh’s dedication to multilateral cooperation, the ambassador underscored the role of dialogue, trust-building measures, and collective global action in achieving a safer, nuclear-free world.
